Job Description

The Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides specialized instructional support to students with hearing impairments across multiple school settings within the CiTi BOCES region. This role involves direct service, consultation, and collaboration with general education teachers, families, service providers, and school personnel to support student success and promote inclusive practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct instruction to students who are deaf or hard of hearing, aligned with Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
  • Support students' development in auditory skills, speech reading, language (spoken and/or signed), communication strategies, and self-advocacy.
  • Collaborate with general and special education staff to adapt curriculum, materials, and assessments to meet students' hearing needs.
  • Consult regularly with school teams and families to promote accommodations and modifications that enhance access to the educational environment.
  • Monitor and document student progress; participate in IEP meetings, evaluations, and eligibility discussions.
  • Travel between schools and districts within the CiTi BOCES service area to provide services.
  • Educate peers and school staff on hearing loss, communication needs, and inclusive practices.
  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation of services in accordance with BOCES and NYSED regulations.
Job Qualifications

 

Required:

  • Valid New York State certification in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education (Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing).
  • Master’s degree in Education of the Deaf or related field.
  • Knowledge of hearing loss and its impact on language, learning, and communication

Preferred:

  • Experience working in an itinerant or school-based setting.
  • Proficiency in sign language (ASL or other modalities as needed).
  • Familiarity with assistive technology and audiological equipment.
