Job Description

The NYS Certified Special Education Teacher in this role is dedicated to supporting students with diverse needs, particularly those aged 16 to 22, in their transition to adulthood. The primary emphasis is on work-based learning experiences that prepare students for successful employment and independent living. The teacher collaborates with students, families, and community partners to create meaningful and practical learning opportunities.

Responsibilities:

1. Instruction and Curriculum:

  •  Develop and implement engaging lesson plans tailored to individual student needs.
  • Provide instruction in core subjects (e.g., math, language arts, science, social studies) using creative and differentiated approaches.
  • Adapt curriculum to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities.
  • Foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-directed learning.
  • Provide instruction on workplace safety, ethics, and professional behavior.

2. Individualized Transition Planning:

  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to create transition plans.
  • Assess students’ strengths, needs, and preferences related to employment, post-secondary education, and independent living.
  • Facilitate career interest inventories and vocational assessments.
  • Support students in setting realistic goals for their transition to adulthood.

3. Work-Based Learning Experiences:

  • Collaborate with Work-Based Learning Coordinator to assist in supporting internal or community-based placements.
  • Provide direct instruction on workplace skills, such as communication, time management, and problem-solving.
  • Foster students’ independence, self-advocacy, and social skills within work settings.

4. Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with community agencies, related service providers, and counselors.
  • Communicate regularly with families to share progress, address concerns, and involve them in transition planning.
  • Attend transition-related meetings, workshops, and professional development opportunities.

5. Advocacy and Empowerment:

  • Advocate for students’ rights and access to inclusive community settings.
  • Empower students to self-advocate and make informed choices about their future.
  • Promote a positive and strengths-based perspective on disability.
Job Qualifications
  • Certification: Hold a valid New York State certification in Special Education.
  • Experience: Prior experience working with students with autism preferred.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with evidence-based practices (e.g. TEACCH).
  • Patience and Empathy: Ability to connect with students, understand their unique perspectives, and adapt teaching methods accordingly.
