Job Description

The Middle School Alternative Education Teacher is a dedicated and compassionate educator who works with students in an alternative educational setting. This role focuses on providing personalized instruction, fostering positive relationships, and supporting students who face academic challenges or behavioral difficulties. The teacher collaborates with colleagues, parents, and support staff to create a supportive learning environment that promotes student growth and success.

Responsibilities:

1. Instruction and Curriculum:

  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans tailored to individual student needs.
  • Provide instruction in core subjects (e.g., math, language arts, science, social studies) using creative and   differentiated approaches.
  • Adapt curriculum to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities.
  • Foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-directed learning.

2. Individualized Support:

  • Collaborate with the program and district team to implement student-specific goals.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust instructional strategies as needed.
  • Address behavioral challenges and promote positive behavior management techniques.
  • Provide academic interventions to help students achieve their educational objectives.

3. Student Engagement and Relationship Building:

  • Create a safe and respectful classroom environment where students feel valued and supported.
  • Build strong relationships with students, understanding their unique backgrounds and needs.
  • Encourage student participation, active learning, and self-advocacy.
  • Celebrate student achievements and milestones.

4. Collaboration:

  • Work closely with other educators, counselors, and support staff to coordinate services.
  • Attend team meetings, parent conferences, and professional development sessions.
  • Collaborate with community agencies and organizations to enhance student support.

5. Documentation and Reporting:

  •  Maintain accurate records of student attendance, behavior, and academic progress.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student performance.

6. Professional Growth:

  • Stay informed about best practices in alternative education.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities.
  • Reflect on teaching practices and seek continuous improvement.
Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Valid NYS teaching certification.
  • Experience working with middle school students, especially those with behavioral or academic challenges.
  • Knowledge of behavior management strategies.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and families.
