Job Description

CiTi BOCES is currently seeking a certified Special Education Teacher. The Special Education Teacher is a dedicated professional responsible for providing specialized education and support to students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) or who have autism - like tendencies within an 8:1:2 ratio in a high school setting. This role involves creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment, implementing evidence-based practices, and ensuring that each student’s unique needs are met.

Responsibilities:

1. Individualized Education Programs (IEPs):

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop, implement, and review IEPs for students.
  • Ensure that IEP goals and objectives align with students’ strengths, challenges, and developmental levels.
  • Monitor progress, adjust strategies, and document outcomes based on IEP benchmarks.

2. Curriculum Development and Differentiation:

  • Design and adapt instructional materials to meet the diverse learning needs of students with autism.
  • Incorporate visual supports, structured routines, and sensory-friendly approaches.
  • Foster communication, social skills, and functional independence.

3. Behavioral Support and Positive Behavior Interventions:

  • Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) to address challenging behaviors.
  • Promote positive behavior through reinforcement strategies and social-emotional learning.
  • Collaborate with behavior specialists and support staff.

4. Assessment and Data Collection:

  • Conduct ongoing assessments to evaluate student progress.
  • Use data-driven decision-making to modify instructional approaches.
  • Maintain accurate records and communicate progress to parents/guardians.

5. Communication and Collaboration:

  • Work closely with speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and other related service providers.
  • Facilitate communication between home and school.
  • Attend IEP meetings and provide input on student needs.

6. Inclusive Classroom Environment:

  • Create a safe, structured, and supportive classroom environment using TEACCH practices (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication-related Handicapped Children).
  • Promote peer interactions and social inclusion.
  • Celebrate individual achievements and foster a sense of belonging.

Job Qualifications
  • Certification: Hold a valid New York State certification in Special Education.

  • Patience and Empathy: Ability to connect with students, understand their unique perspectives, and adapt teaching methods accordingly.
